catholic emancipation 〈英〉天主教徒解放运动 指18世纪末、19世纪初在大不列颠和爱尔兰兴起的解除对天主教徒享有公民权和政治权的限制的运动,以及天主教徒获得法律地位的过程。宗教改革之后英格兰与罗马教徒决裂,建立英格兰国教会,天主教徒失去法律地位并受到惩诫。17世纪实行信仰宽容政策,颁布了《信仰自由法》〔Toleration Act〕,允许天主教徒举行宗教仪式。18世纪天主教徒进一步获得了土地所有权等权益,但必须宣誓效忠国王。最终,英格兰、爱尔兰和苏格兰分别于1778年、1791年和1793年颁布了《解禁法》〔Relief Acts〕,取消了对天主教徒的许多限制。1844年和1926年先后废除了大部分排斥天主教徒的法令。
