interpellatio (in-t[schwa]r-p[schwa]-lay-shee-oh), n. [Latin “a demand, interruption”] Roman law.

1. A demand for payment of a debt or for desistance from a course of action.

2. The interruption of a process, e.g., of the acquisition of title by possession.

3. The institution of a legal process or appeal. Pl. interpellationes (in-t[schwa]r-p[schwa]-lay-shee-oh-neez).
