driving under the influence. The offense of operating a motor vehicle in a physically or mentally impaired condition, esp. after consuming alcohol or drugs. • Generally, this is a lesser offense than driving while intoxicated. But in a few jurisdictions the two are synonymous. — Abbr. DUI. — Also termed driving while ability-impaired (DWAI); driving under the influence of liquor (DUIL); driving while intoxicated (DWI); operating under the influence (OUI); operating while intoxicated (OWI); operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (OMVI); operating a motor vehicle under the influence (OMVUI).
