State Department of U.S. 〈美〉国务院 美国政府的首要行政部门，建立于1789年，由国务卿〔Secretary of States〕领导，在美国建国初期兼理内政、外交事务。现在，其主要职能是管理外交事务和对外贸易关系,对包括贸易关系〔trade relations〕、环境事务〔environmental concerns〕和人权问题〔human-rights issues〕在内的外事政策问题进行分析、提出建议并执行相应政策。该词亦称Department of State。

Department of State (1) 〈美〉国务院 美国主管外交的部门，首长是国务卿。 (→State Department) (2) 〈英〉政府部门 指英国中央政府的各个分支机构。由文官充当职员，其负责人被称作大臣和部长。在某些情况下，因历史原因，那些主持有较长历史的部门的领导具有特别称号，如财政大臣〔Chancellor of the Exchequer〕，较老的部门一般沿用传统名称，如内政部〔Home Office〕、外交部〔Foreign Office〕，但一些现代的部门趋向于叫「Ministries」或者「departments」，如国防部〔Ministry of Defence〕，环境保护部〔Department of the Environment〕等。
