指保险合同提前结束时，按短期费率计算保险有效期的保费后，将余额返还给被保险人，保险合同终止。一般保险合同的解除、无效、终止、停效等，返还保费均有计算标准，包括比例退费（pro rata)与短期费率退费两类。凡保险合同终止归因于被保险人的，多采用短期费率退费方式，因为保险人已发生固定的营业费用，故以短期计算保费。
