wax scot

wax scot (wak skot), n. [fr. Old English sceotan “contribution, tax”] Hist. A duty on wax candles used in churches, usu. paid twice a year. — Also termed cerage (seer-ij); ceratium (si-ray-shee-[schwa]m).
