denarius (di-nair-ee-[schwa]s), n. [Law Latin “penny”]

1. Roman law. The principal silver coin used by the Romans.

2. Hist. An English penny; a pence.

3. (pl.) Slang. Money in general. Pl. denarii. — Also termed (in senses 1 & 3) denier.
