euro (yuur-oh). The official currency of most countries in the European Union. • On January 1, 1999, the euro became the single currency of the participating countries. The present participants are Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Euro notes and coins were issued on January 1, 2002.
