candidate, n. [fr. Latin candidatus, “clothed in white”; fr. candidus, “white,” from the white toga worn by a can-didate for public office in ancient Rome as a symbol of clean government] An individual seeking nomination, election, or appointment to an office, membership, award, or like title or status. • A candidate for election becomes a “nominee” after being formally nominated.
