mandatary

mandatary (man-d[schwa]-ter-ee), n.

1. A person to whom a mandate is given. See MANDATE(5).

2. An agent, esp. one who acts gratuitously but is entitled to be indemnified for expenses incurred in carrying out the mandate. — Also termed (in Roman law) mandatarius.

3. Civil law. The person who is employed to a mandator in a gratuitous agency. — Also termed mandatee; mandatarius. See MANDATE(5). — mandatary, adj.
