encomienda (en-koh-mee-en-dah), n. [Spanish] Spanish law.

1. A royal grant to a private person of a certain portion of territory in the Spanish colonies, together with the concession of a certain number of the native inhabitants, on the feudal principle of commendation.

2. A royal grant of privileges to the military orders of Spain.

3. A mandate for a person to do a specific commission.

4. Something given by mandate; esp., a parcel.
