1. A tenant’s action in continuing to occupy the leased premises after the lease term has expired. • Holding over creates a tenancy at sufferance, with the tenant being referred to as a holdover. 2. Parliamentary law. An officer’s continued tenure beyond the term for which he or she was elected, usu. because a successor has not been elected or cannot yet assume the office.
