1. Tending to bring about a result.

2. A contributing factor.

3. Hist. A person who, as a result of being or representing a past or present member of a corporation, is liable to contribute to the corporation’s debts upon its winding up.

contributory a. (1)促成的；发生作用的 (2)(年金、保险金等)由僱主与僱员共同分担的 n. (3)促成因素；发生作用的因素之一 (4)捐献人；出资人 (5)〈英〉清算缴款人；清算出资人 指在公司破产清算时有义务对公司资产进行出资以偿付公司债务的人。法院或破产清算人的首要任务即在于确定应承担清算缴款义务的人员名单，并确定各人应承担的责任。根据1948年《公司法》〔Companies Act〕，在破产清算开始前曾经担任公司股东的任何人均可被列入清算缴款人名单，但是，以往的股东对于其退出公司后发生的任何公司债务均不承担责任，并且只有在现有股东不能完全承担缴款责任的情况下才承担缴款责任，故这一名单又分成甲表〔A list〕和乙表〔B list〕，其中甲表是在清算命令〔winding-up order〕之后即行制发的，包括在清算开始时的公司股东，而乙表是在表明甲表中的股东不能承担责任的情况下制发的，包括在清算开始前1年内的公司股东。一旦被列入名单并被通知催缴股款〔call〕的，则清算缴款人承担的责任只能通过付款而得免除。法院有权逮捕逃亡的清算缴款人。 (→A and B lists; call; balance order)
