hat money. Maritime law. A small gratuity traditionally paid to the master (and sometimes the crew) of a ship for the care of the cargo.

“Primage and average, which are mentioned in bills of lading, mean a small compensation or duty paid to the master, over and above the freight, for his care and trouble as to the goods. It belongs to him of right, and it is not understood to be covered by the policy of insurance.
