toll, n.

1. A tax or due paid for the use of something; esp., the consideration paid either to use a public road, highway, or bridge, or to maintain a booth for the sale of goods at a fair or market. 2. A right to collect such a tax or due.

3. The privilege of being free from such a tax or due.

2. (Of a time period, esp. a statutory one) to stop the running of; to abate (toll the limitations period). See EQUITABLE TOLLING.
