An international treaty promulgating standards and procedures for depositing microorganisms and requiring member countries to recognize a deposit of biological material made in any depository approved by the World Intellectual Property Organization. • The purpose of the Budapest Treaty is to allow inventors to satisfy the enablement requirement of national patent laws by depositing in a convenient depository a sample of a microorganism to be patented. The U.S. is a signatory to the Budapest Treaty.
