colony

colony, n. Int’l law.

1. A dependent territorial entity subject to the sovereignty of an independent country, but considered part of that country for purposes of relations with third countries.

2. A group of people who live in a new territory but retain ties with their parent country.

3. The territory inhabited by such a group. Cf. MOTHER COUNTRY. — colonize, vb. — colonial, adj.
