2. Family law. The rule that once a court has acquired jurisdiction over a child-custody or support case, that court continues to have jurisdiction to modify orders, even if the child or a parent moves to another state. [Cases: Child Custody 745; Child Support 507. C.J.S. Parent and Child §§ 205, 246, 251–253.]
