1. Roman law. A division of the later Roman Empire into groups of provinces.

2. Eccles. law. A territorial unit of the church, governed by a bishop, and further divided into parishes.

3. Eccles. law. A bishop’s jurisdiction. • Several dioceses together are governed by an archbishop.

diocese n. 〈英〉教区 主教宗教权管辖的巡查区域，下分执事长监察区〔archdeaconries〕，执事长监察区下分教长代理辖区〔rural deaneries〕，教长代理辖区下分堂区。每个教区都有主教法院〔consistory court〕，坎特伯雷教区是代理主教法院〔Commissary Court〕，法官由负责主教管区司法事务的副主教〔chancellor〕担任。尽管副主教受命于主教，但是他依法获得法官的权威，不受主教的控制。副主教亦担任主教的教务总长〔official principal〕和教区的主教总代理〔vicar-general〕。
