empresario (em-pre-sahr-ee-oh), n. [Spanish]

1. Spanish law. A businessperson; one who invests in or manages a business; esp., a land developer.

2. Hist. A person receiving extensive land grants as consideration for bringing people into Mexico (esp. into what would become Texas) and settling them on the land for the purpose of increasing the population, developing the country’s resources, and controlling the aboriginal peoples.
