gantlet

gantlet (gawnt-lit). [fr. Swedish gata “lane” + lopp “course”]

1. Hist. A former military punishment in which the offender was stripped to the waist and forced to run between two rows of soldiers who gave him lashes as he passed.

2. A series of severe troubles or difficulties; an ordeal. — Also spelled gauntlet; (archaically) gantlope.
