imprimatur (im-pri-may-t[schwa]r or -mah-t[schwa]r). [Latin “let it be printed”]

1. A license required to publish a book. • Once required in England, the imprimatur is now encountered only rarely in countries that censor the press.

2. A general grant of approval; commendatory license or sanction.
