A crime that can be prosecuted only by indictment.

indictable offense 可诉罪；公诉罪 只能以大陪审团起诉书〔indictment〕起诉的犯罪。在普通法上，可诉罪包括叛国罪、可判死刑的犯罪、重罪。在美国联邦法院，可诉罪指可被判处死刑、1年以上监禁刑或劳役的犯罪；在英国，对犯罪有一种较简单的划分，即分为公诉罪和简易罪〔summary offence〕。其中，公诉罪指，如果由成年人实施(对18岁以下的未成年犯罪人适用特殊规则)，可依公诉书按正式起诉程序审理〔triable on indictment〕的犯罪，而不论对该种犯罪是否只能依公诉书审理，还是既可依公诉书审理，也可按简易程序审理〔triable either way〕。
