interregnum (in-t[schwa]-reg-n[schwa]m).

1. An interval between reigns; the time when a throne is vacant between the reign of a sovereign and the accession of a successor.

2. Archaic. Authority exercised during a temporary vacancy of the throne or a suspension of the regular government.

3. A break or pause in a continuous event.
