Civil law. A limitation that the law imposes on the use of an estate for the benefit of the general public or of a particular person or persons.

• Examples of legal servitudes are restrictions on certain uses of the shores of navigable rivers, and the obligation of an owner to provide a passage to an enclosed estate.
