lucrative title

Civil law. A title acquired without giving anything in exchange for the property; title by which a person acquires anything that comes as a clear gain, as by gift, descent, or devise.

• Because lucrative title is usu. acquired by gift or inheritance, it is treated as the separate property of a married person. Cf. onerous title.
