Family law. A judicial hearing involving alleged child abuse or some other situation in which a child has not been properly cared for by a parent or person legally responsible for the child’s care.

• At issue is the civil culpability of the parent or responsible party and the possible loss of children into foster care or — in extreme cases — the termination of parental rights. [Cases: Infants 203. C.J.S. Infants §§ 51–52, 62, 64–67.]
