nixie. [fr. German nichts “nothing”]

1. A piece of mail that cannot be delivered, usu. because the addressee is fictitious or the address is incorrect.

2. Hist. An undeliverable piece of mail created by a postal inspector for the purpose of discovering interference with mail processing and delivery. — Also termed nix; nixey.
