nominatio auctoris (nah-mi-nay-shee-oh awk-tor-is). [Latin “naming of the originator (or seller)”]

1. In an action for the recovery of something, such as real estate, the defendant’s plea that the property is actually owned by another party. • The true owner is then required to defend the action.

2. Roman law. In an action alleging ownership of an item, the defendant’s plea naming the seller, who then must assist in the defense of the action against the plaintiff. — Also termed laudare auctorem.
