nones (nohnz), n. [fr. Latin nonus “ninth”]

1. Roman law. In the Roman calendar, the ninth day before the ides, being the 7th of March, May, July, and October, and the 5th of the other months.

2. Eccles. law. In the Roman Catholic church, one of the seven daily canonical hours (about 3:00 p.m.) for prayer and devotion.

3. Archaic. The ninth hour after sunrise, usu. about 3:00 p.m. Cf. CALENDS; IDES.
