An elementary, middle, or high school established under state law, regulated by the local state authorities in the various political subdivisions, funded and maintained by public taxation, and open and free to all children of the particular district where the school is located.

public school (1)〈美〉公立学校 根据州法设立、并由设在当地的州政府机关管理的小学、初级中学和高级中学，此类学校由公共税收〔public tax〕资助，凡在设立该学校的特定区域中的所有儿童皆可免费入学。该词亦称common school。 (2)〈英〉公学 向社会开放，凡符合条件即可入学的学校。狭义指1868年《公学法》〔Public Schools Act〕所提到的七所公学，即伊顿〔Eton〕、温切斯特〔Winchester〕、威斯敏斯特〔Westminster〕、查特霍斯〔Charterhouse〕、哈罗〔Harrow〕、拉格比〔Rugby〕和什鲁斯伯里〔Shrewsbury〕。
