repudium

repudium (ri-pyoo-dee-[schwa]m), n. [Latin] Roman law. The revocation of betrothal or marriage by either the man or the woman. • After Augustus, it was necessary to send the other spouse a letter of repudiation in order to terminate the marriage. Cf. DIVORTIUM.
