seneschal

seneschal (sen-[schwa]-sh[schwa]l), n. [Law French] Hist.

1. A French title of office, equivalent to a steward in England. • A seneschal was originally a duke’s lieutenant or a lieutenant to other dignities of the kingdom.

2. The steward of a manor.

3. Hist. An administrative or judicial officer, such as the governor of a city or province. — Also termed senescallus.
