1. Civil law. An elaborate hand-drawn symbol (usu. incorporating a cross and the notary’s initials) formerly placed at the base of notarial instruments, later replaced by a seal.

2. Scots law. A seal used to authenticate summonses in civil matters before the Court of Session. • Originally, this was the monarch’s personal seal. See WRITER TO THE SIGNET.
