dux (d[schwa]ks), n. [fr. Latin ducere “to lead”] 1. Roman law. An army commander. 2. Roman law. A military governor of a province. • This term was eventually used also as a title of distinction. 3. Hist. (cap.) Duke; a title of nobility. See DUKE.
