life peerage 〈英〉 (1)终身贵族；非世袭贵族 (2)终身贵族爵位；非世袭贵族爵位 19世纪以前，贵族大多是世袭的，非世袭的终身贵族为数不多，由国王以公开发表的特许状〔letters patent〕授予男爵〔baron〕爵位，以终身享有为限，并不得出席上议院，无投票权，甚至不发给议会召入令〔writ of summons to Parliament〕。1856年，为加强上议院的司法功能，财税法庭法官詹姆斯·帕克爵士〔Sir James Parke〕被封为终身贵族，但上议院特权委员会仍认为帕克不能担任议员和投票，其后他才被授予世袭爵位。1876年，《上诉管辖权法》〔Appellate Jurisdiction Act〕授权增封4名终身贵族作为常任上诉法官〔Lords of Appeal in Ordinary〕，协助履行上议院的司法职能。1958年，《终身贵族法》〔Life Peerages Act〕为终身贵族的增封作出一般规定，授予男爵爵位，同时取消妇女不能担任上议院议员的限制。从此时起，事实上新增封的贵族都是终身贵族。终身贵族终身享有收受议会召入令的权利，退休后继续享有。
