• A unified family court also hears matters typically heard in family court (in jurisdictions that have statutory family courts) or in courts of general jurisdiction, such as divorce, paternity, and emancipation proceedings. Proponents of unified family courts cite the benefits of having all family-related matters heard by one court — for instance, the benefit of having a child testify only once rather than forcing the child to testify in one court in a divorce proceeding, in a different court in criminal proceedings against an abuser, and in yet another in a civil proceeding initiated by Child Protective Services.
