vidua regis (vij-oo-[schwa] ree-jis), n. [Latin]

1. The widow of the king.

2. The widow of a tenant in capite. • In sense 2, she was so called because she was not allowed to marry a second time without the king’s permission. She obtained her dower from the king, who was her patron and defender.
