servus (s[schwa]r-v[schwa]s), n. [Latin]

1. Roman law. A slave; a human being who was property, and could be bought, sold, pledged, and testated. • A Roman slave who was formally freed became a Roman citizen. Cf. INGENUUS; LATINI JUNIANI; LIBERTINII.

2. Hist. A bondman; a servant.
