The principle that the United States will allow no intervention or domination by any non-American nation in the Western Hemisphere.

• This principle, which has some recognition in international law (though not as a formal doctrine), was first announced by President James Monroe in 1823.

Monroe Doctrine 门罗主义 美国的一项政策，即美国有权抵制任何欧洲国家干涉美洲大陆的事务。该政策源于1823年美国总统门罗致国会的一项咨文，在该咨文中，门罗总统重申了美国不干涉欧洲事务的政策，同时阐明了美国支持美洲大陆不受外来势力干涉的原则。1864-1867年间，「门罗主义」被援用来反对法国在墨西哥的马克沁米林〔Maximilian〕政权，1899年被援用来劝使英国接受对委内瑞拉边境争端的仲裁。这一政策的最初目的在于排挤欧洲在西半球的势力，但后来却被解释为不仅把欧洲势力、还要把美国势力排除出拉丁美洲。
