damnosa hereditas (dam-noh-s[schwa] h[schwa]-red-i-tas), n. [Latin “an injurious inheritance”]

1. Roman & civil law. An inheritance more onerous than beneficial, esp. because it is burdened with debt.

2. English law. A bankrupt debtor’s property that creditors will disclaim under the bankruptcy laws because debt on the property will exceed revenues.

3. Generally, anything that is acquired but turns out to be disadvantageous. — Also spelled damnosa haereditas.
