entente (ahn-tahnt). [French “intent, understanding”] Int’l law.

1. An understanding that two or more nations have for carrying out a common policy or course of action. • An entente is looser than an alliance but stronger than the nations’ merely having good relations.

2. The nations having such an understanding. Cf. ALLIANCE; DéTENTE.
