herald, n.

1. In England and Scotland, one of several officers responsible for keeping genealogical lists and tables, adjusting armorial bearings, and regulating the ceremonies at royal coronations and funerals. • There are six in England and three in Scotland.

2. Hist. A messenger who announces royal or state proclamations, and who carries diplomatic messages (esp. proclamations of war, peace, or truce) between kings or countries.
