herald n. (1)信使；使节 (2)纹章官 这一官职在古代有一部分职责是掌握马上比武活动。起初是王室或贵族成员，负责登记宗谱、纹章、徽章、管理葬礼事宜、充当信使、宣布战争与和平。在英格兰，有9个纹章官。1484年，英格兰国王理查三世建立了纹章院〔College of Arms〕。在现代，英格兰与苏格兰的纹章院主要参与王室典礼、颁授纹章、记载纹章及宗谱、处理涉及优先权的事宜。
