life peerage. English law. The grant of the noble title of baron to a person for life, offered through letters patent. • The Life Peerages Act of 1958 first allowed this and removed the disqualifications of women from serving in the House of Lords. See PEER.

life peerage 〈英〉 (1)终身贵族；非世袭贵族 (2)终身贵族爵位；非世袭贵族爵位 19世纪以前，贵族大多是世袭的，非世袭的终身贵族为数不多，由国王以公开发表的特许状〔letters patent〕授予男爵〔baron〕爵位，以终身享有为限，并不得出席上议院，无投票权，甚至不发给议会召入令〔writ of summons to Parliament〕。1856年，为加强上议院的司法功能，财税法庭法官詹姆斯·帕克爵士〔Sir James Parke〕被封为终身贵族，但上议院特权委员会仍认为帕克不能担任议员和投票，其后他才被授予世袭爵位。1876年，《上诉管辖权法》〔Appellate Jurisdiction Act〕授权增封4名终身贵族作为常任上诉法官〔Lords of Appeal in Ordinary〕，协助履行上议院的司法职能。1958年，《终身贵族法》〔Life Peerages…
