hypothecate
hypothecate v. 抵押 通过签订合同而指定特定的动产或不动产作为债务清偿的担保，但不移转该物的占有，在债务人未履行债务时有权出卖该抵押物。它源于罗马法的抵押〔hypotheca〕，而区别于质押〔pignus〕。严格而言，该词只存在于大陆法中，在英美法中有相似的术语，如mortgage、charge等。 (→pledge; rehypothecation; hypotheca)
