militia n. (1)全体民兵；民兵组织 接受军事训练但平时不是正规军队的群众性武装组织，仅在紧急情况下执行军事任务。 (2)〈美〉国民警卫队 殖民地时期各社区男性青壮年建立起民兵组织。1791年美国宪法第二条修正案重申民兵组织对各州安全的必要性。1824年，纽约州民兵组织定名为国民警卫队。1903年的法令使国民警卫队成为国家的预备役部队，由联邦装备武器，各州分别管理。国民警卫队经常应各州和联邦当局要求在发生地区骚乱时维护秩序。 (3)(罗马法)军役(→active militia; National Guard；state militia)
