orphan n. 孤儿 通指父母双亡或一方已故的儿童或未成年人,后者正确的称呼为半孤儿〔half orphan〕或无父的儿童。在英国,御前大臣〔Lord Chancellor〕是所有孤儿和未成年人的总监护人。在伦敦,市长和高级市政官〔Lord Mayor and Aldermen〕通过孤儿法庭〔Court of Orphan〕对已故自由民的孤儿进行监护,并保管其土地和财物;其遗嘱执行人相应地将死者的遗产目录呈交市财务官〔Chamberlain〕,并保证该孤儿的份额。监护人的津贴根据1975年《社会保障法》〔Social Security Act〕支付。
