impound

impound, vb.

1. To place (something, such as a car or other personal property) in the custody of the police or the court, often with the understanding that it will be returned intact at the end of the proceeding.

2. To take and retain possession of (something, such as a forged document to be produced as evidence) in preparation for a criminal prosecution.
