jail n. 监狱；看守所 英国称为gaol。该词最早起源于拉丁文carea,所以两种形式引入英语中，一种为来源于古法语的jaiole,后演变为jail，另一种来源于盎格鲁-诺曼法语gaole的gayole,后演变为gaol。jail为一种介于警察局拘留所〔police station lockup〕与监狱〔prison〕之间的监禁机构，关押等待审判的未决犯和轻罪犯。
